We had our Powell Family Reunion here in Utah this year, and it was a ton of fun! Many of the activities took place at Janice's house (whose basement we live in), so we were involved with the reunion as often as we were home. We were both working full-time during the reunion, so most of the things we did with the family were on the weekend.
The highlight of the reunion was the pig! Some of you commented on the fact that we posted earlier about our pet pig. Our family members were told that Dave loved the pig more than he loved me. Well, that wasn't entirely true. Dave loved the pig more than I loved the pig. And that was because the pig was a butchered pig that we picked up from a meat-packing house and roasted in the ground for the reunion!
Dave roasted a pig for a church activity a few years ago, and has wanted to do it again ever since. We were going to roast a pig for our wedding reception last year (it's been almost 1 year!), but it ended up not happening. So Dave was really excited to do it for the reunion and practice his pig-roasting SKILLZ!
The pig was a success, and even though it was a lot of work to cook it, it was pretty fun. All of my cousins and their kids were really interested in looking at the pig, before and after it was roasted, and it just brought a fun atmosphere to our Saturday dinner.
Some other highlights from the reunion were:
1. taking naps!
2. seeing lots of my family in church.
3. saying hi to cousins that I haven't seen for a long time.
4. playing TONS of games! I am a game person, and while Dave is kind enough to play games with me when I want him to, he doesn't really love games as much as I do. So during the reunion I could always find someone that wanted to play a game with me. Some of my favorites are Banaanza and Ticket to Ride.
5. Introducing Dave to lots of new family members. He's pretty good about remembering names, and during that week he met a lot of folks. I was way impressed!
6. Seeing my nieces and nephews! My sister Jill's youngest, Gabe, was just a few weeks old when Dave and I got married, and that was the last time I saw him! So he'd grown a lot and it was fun to see him.
It was a fun week! We are glad to have the house back to its usual peace and quiet, but we are already looking forward to the next family reunion!

Updates
So, updates for the months of April, May, June, and July:
Dave and I have been running pretty regularly. We try to run about 3 times a week. We don't always make it, but then we count in our Sunday walk! When we go for our runs, we have several different routes that we take, to keep things interesting. One is in the field at the junior high behind our house. Another is around the big block (that's actually really a few blocks together). One is through the neighborhood that's across the Jordan Parkway from us. That one is my favorite because I like to look at the houses that we pass and plan what our house will look like one day.
I participated in National Multiple Sclerosis Society MS Walk in Salt Lake City this year. This actually took place on April 24, but I never blogged about it. It was a 3-mile walk to benefit the MS Society and its research on Multiple Sclerosis. I did this with my friend Tara Hoppie (Jenny's sister-in-law) and a bunch of her friends and family. There were a TON of people doing the walk, and it was a blast. I keep meaning to post pictures of this, which has kept me from posting at all. So I am just going to go ahead and post without them, and then write another post with pictures if I ever get around to it!
Dave had his birthday on May 21. He's a few months younger than I am, and let me tell you, it's so much fun to rob this cradle! We had fun, and I am looking forward to growing 1 year older with him.
The show Lost finished on May 23. Wow! What a journey. I was personally very moved by the ending. My interpretation is that the people from the island ended up in some kind of afterlife, where they are somewhat distracted from that fact because they are busy living the lives that they wanted to live. But they are reminded of what was really important to them (their experiences on the island) by the people who truly mattered to them. It was a beautiful ending. It motivated me to really live my life spending time on the beautiful things that I will want to remember after this life.
Halfway through the summer I finished teaching 2 classes and started 2 new classes. The evening writing class ended on June 17. Then my new morning reading class started on June 21. The daytime writing class ended on June 23. Then the afternoon reading class started on June 24! So at most I've been teaching 3 classes at once. Right now all I'm teaching is reading, and I'm so glad to leave behind grading essays, until I start teaching another writing class in the fall!
On June 24, my sister Erin found out she's having a boy! I am so excited for her! This is her 2nd child, and my 20th neice/nephew! Whew!
We just bought a pet pig!
I really like this swimsuit and I want to win it!
Dave is starting to work at the District Attorney's office in Slat Lake instead of the Attorney General's Office. He is going to be doing criminal work now (criminal law that is, not criminal activities). He's enjoyed his time at the Attorney General's Office, but he's looking forward to getting experience in what will hopefully be his line of work after he receives his JD next year.
So that's it for us! I have been meaning to post this for quite some time now, and I'm forcing myself to post it without pictures. But know that we are alive and well, and we'll be updating again soon!

Thanksgiving
We had a WONDERFUL time in Arizona for Thanksgiving. There was lots of food, lots of playing games, and lots of kids! All of my siblings were there, with their spouses and kids. At one point we were all there, except for one of my brothers-in-law. I think that's the first time we've all been together like that in a LONG time.
I loved eating all of the Thanksgiving food! Dave and I both felt like we ate too much, but it was so good! Especially the green olives! :D
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving with family or friends, and that you're getting into the Christmas spirit!

I'm thankful for family.
Instance #1: Dave's sister Anita and her husband Dean came over to our basement last night. We ate dinner and played games. It was so much fun. They got married 6 months before Dave and I did, so they're newly weds like us.
Instance #2: Dave and I went to eat dinner at Jenny and Craig's house on Sunday night. When we were done eating, we just sat for a while and chatted. We laughed and had fun. Their kids are constantly saying, "Dave!" and trying to show him something or do something with him. He's definitely been adopted into the family by them!
Instance #3: Dave and I are driving down to Arizona in about a week for Thanksgiving!! All of my family are going to be there! I'm going to get a break from school! And I can't wait!

Happy New Year!
As I look back on 2008, I am happy with a lot of things that have happened. I graduated! I've gotten a lot of experience in my field, which should make it more likely that I'll be accepted into my grad program this year. I've dated several very good guys, and although things didn't work out with any of them I loved the experiences that I had with them. I've accomplished a lot of my goals. And I've set several goals.
Now you probably expect me to talk about my new goals for the New Year. But I'm actually not going to set any new goals. I was already planning not to when I read my friend Jo-Pete's explanation for not setting new goals, which perfectly coincides with mine. I think that you can't depend on a set time of year to give you the motivation to achieve. You have to develop that motivation and adapt your goals as your motivation and needs change. So I've decided that this year I'm going to take a good look at the several goals that I'm currently working on, and I'm going to revamp them if they need it. And then I'm going to keep on with them. I may add one new goal. That would be exercising regularly. This may seem funny to you because I talk about not setting new goals at New Year's because it won't give me added motivation to accomplish them and then I consider adding the typical New Year's resolution. But I've been considering this for a long time. I set up a running chart for myself months ago, and I've talked to a friend of mine about running with her. I've also been very busy with school and so not willing to spend time exercising. So, for all of these reasons, I feel like this has been a goal of mine already that I'm just getting around to starting. And I think it will work. So I'm excited for 2009!

Christmas
I had a great Christmas vacation. I spent it lounging around, reading Harry Potter, going through my belongings in the attic and weeding out things to throw away, hanging out with my family and friends, eating good food, shredding papers, buying presents, playing games, and partaking of the Christmas Spirit! I was the only one home with my parents for most of the time, and it was nice to spend time with them. We laughed a lot!
I have been thinking a lot about what makes Christmas so special. I've reflected on Christ's birth, time spent with family, traditions, and gifts. These things seemed like the most important things of the season. And I just finished a book called "Simplify Your Christmas" by Elaine St. James, that gave me some ideas about how I could really focus on these important things by cutting out the other unnecessary parts of the season that have taken over our culture. I found some really good suggestions that I plan on implementing in my own Christmases in the future. They include buying fewer presents, buying consumable presents so that presents don't clutter the receiver's life, reducing decorations, and not having a Christmas tree (it's not very green to be cutting down a tree every year and then throwing it into a landfill). They also include doing more service, taking time to meditate, choosing a symbol that your family can focus on, and creating traditions that don't add stress to your life. I loved it, and would recommend it.

Surprise Birthday Party
My mom's 60th was on Saturday. And we surprised her by dropping in on her surprise birthday party! My dad is so cute, and decided to organize a surprise birthday party for her that night, tricking her into thinking that they were going to have dinner with just our neighbors, but really inviting several friends from church and other places. Well, when us kids heard about this, we decided that we wanted to be in on the surprise too! So earlier that week we all started making arrangements to travel to Flagstaff (only one sibling lives in Flagstaff). I was so excited about it all week, and thought about it a ton! And actually, on our way into Flag I thought to myself, "Did I blog about the surprise party?" It's totally the kind of thing that I would blog about (hence this post), and I'm totally the kind of person to forget the fact that my mother reads my blog! And I'm sure that that feeling of having spilled the beans was enhanced by the fact that I HAD posted this about my mom and her birthday. Fortunately, it was a false alarm and I hadn't ruined the surprise. The Packard memory strikes again!
So, all of us kids drove secretly to Flag this weekend and waited until about 20 minutes after the first surprise has been sprung on her. This is Ellie and Jace, while we're waiting.

Then we went over to our neighbors' (Lois and Nicole) house. We went in the front door quietly. My mom's back was turned toward the front door, so she didn't see us come in.

My Dad said that he had one more surprise for my mom, and then asked one of the us to come put our hands over mom's eyes to see if she could guess who it was. He specifically asked for someone "shorter" so that one of the grandkids would go up. Taylor did it.

After she guessed for a bit, they turned her around! Here are our faces as we yell surprise!

And here is her face when she saw us all! She was so surprised!

After the surprise, we all sat around and ate and talked and laughed and had fun and took a lot of pictures, as you can see below! Here I am picking my nose! Just kidding! You can see that my finger is just to the side of my nose, and closer to the camera, although I don't know what I'm pointing up for. Just thought it was funny!

Aren't the people in my family great!

Explanation
The last post was an experiment, to help my mom learn how to use Reader. We needed a post on my blog that she hadn't read, so I provided one for her.
I'm thankful for moms (mine, in particular) who want to learn how to better stay in contact with their daughters (me, in particular). This Saturday is my mom's birthday (I'm sure she wouldn't want me to post her age here on my blog, but let's just say that in another 40 years she'll be 100), so I'm going to make a special post for all of the things that I'm thankful for about her then. In the mean time, I'm very thankful for all of the cool settings and options that Google produces for blogs and email and things (I also explained how to use labels and how to archive things tonight).

HELP!!!
I've realized that my life has become a little wrapped around the blogs I read. You wouldn't think so, with how infrequently I post on my blog, but that's because all of the time that I spend in the blogging world is spent reading and not writing! And when I do post, it's usually a tag, or posting my writing from Two Good Things. Things have GOT to change!
I want to consider this blog as my journal that I don't mind people reading...and pretty much my only journal right now. I haven't written in my journal since August. So that means that I need to start including my feelings and thoughts about events in my life, or I'm really going to start feeling like this blog is pointless.
So, first on the menu: cutting down on the blogs I read. That's the only answer. And I'm afraid that it's going to have to come from those blogs that I blog stalk first, which are kind of my "candy" blogs. I really like reading Seriously, So Blessed, and It's Complicated, but if I have to give up one of them it's going to be It's Complicated. It's an interesting blog about a divorcee's return to single life, but she's a complete stranger, and it's not as interesting as Seriously, So Blessed. I can easily give up The Sartorialist, but that's one that takes very little time to read (It's mostly just artsy photographs). I have decided that I won't give up Three Beautiful Things because it also takes very little time to read, and it brightens my day. And the rest of the random blogs I follow post so infrequently that it doesn't seem worth it to unsubscribe from them to save time.
So, then it comes down to choosing between my friends' and families' blogs. You guys are so good! You post things all the time, and they're interesting things! I don't want to have to cut anyone out! (And when I say "cut someone out" I mean unsubscribing to their blog on Google Reader. I'll still have the links to all the blogs on my blog so that I can visit whenever I want. And I could even resubscribe once this semester is over, probably. I'm just too busy right now!) What this all basically comes down to is this: I might not be reading your blog. And even if I am reading your blog, I probably will not be doing much commenting or responding to tags. You may think this is lame, but I have to do a revamp of my blog to survive (Hence the new look!).
Hmmmm...Yeah, it feels good to have decided that.

Reunion
I want to make a couple comments about my reunion last week. It was such a fun week! I was there from July 25 to August 1, and it was one of the most relaxing, pleasant weeks of my life. What made it really awesome were the people and the activities:

Kate and Rachel Call, Alyssa Peterson, and I are the older single girl cousins, and we had some fun times this past week!
Kate Call

Rachel Call

Alyssa Peterson

A bunch of us went to Silverwood, a roller coaster park/water park in Idaho. We drove three hours, road the rides, ate food, walked around, laughed, took pictures, got rained on, and drove home.
Ben Call; Vanessa, Sara, and Valerie Garrett; and me!
These are some of the next generation: My cousins' children. The little girls all put their hair up in sponge curlers and they were so adorable! One of them kept saying, "I look like Shirley Temples!"
Back: Ruth Thomas, Olivia Warnick, and Ashly Flint
Front: Leah and Mercy Thomas
Another fun time: I was walking home one evening with my niece Taylor. It was starting to get dark, and we were walking next to a yard with a lot of trees and bushes blocking our view. We heard something squeaky, like a bicycle. I told her that it reminded me of a scary story. Really, I just wanted an excuse to tell a scary story, because I thought it would be fun to try to scare Taylor. So I made up a story about a babysitter who lost one of the children to a bicyclist.
One last pleasant memory: The last night, I slept outside of the tent, and the wind was blowing over me. It was a warm wind, and it blew through the leaves in a beautiful rustling noise. It made me wish that I could always sleep outside. What a wonderful reunion it was!

People Say the Darndest Things
I am in Washington right now for a family reunion. It's been a great 5 days, and I'm still here for a few more! I'd have to say that one of the best things I'm experiencing here at the reunion is the little kids in my family. Only one of my nieces is here, Taylor, but I have some younger cousins here, and my cousins' children are all quite young. They are so much fun to listen to because they really say and do some funny things. Here are a few examples:
My cousin Mette's daughter Olivia was describing why she doesn't like wearing shorts. We think she was describing a wedgie. She said, "My underwear scrunches up and sticks to my bum." I laughed so hard when I heard this!
Mette's youngest son, Gareth, is maybe 6 months old, and a very fat, happy baby. I have had so much fun tickling him and making him laugh. The funniest thing to see is when he really isn't happy (when he's hungry or tired) and he tries really hard to be happy so he'll smile a little and he won't cry, but he'll make these funny grunting noises and his eyes look worried. You just know that he'd prefer to be happy, but he just can't help himself!
My cousin Betsey's daughter Mercy was coloring with some crayons and singing to herself. I wasn't really paying attention to the words, but my aunt told me that she was singing, "Silver where are you? I need you green. Blue, come here." She was singing to the crayons that she was using! What an imaginative mind!
This next story is about something funny that I almost said. I was laughing at myself all day about it. I was sitting outside, and I heard a child saying over and over "Ow. Ow. Ow." I wondered who was getting rereatedly hit. So I looked around and saw my cousin Mette's son Justice whacking himself again and again with a stick. It was obvious that he wasn't really hurting himself, he was just doing it for something to do. I wanted to say something to him so that he would stop (it was annoying), and I was about to say "Justice, self-flatulation is not acceptable." Fortunately, I realized that was wrong and took a moment to think about that statement, and at the end of that moment Justice had stopped hitting himself so I didn't need to say anything. It took me several minutes to realize that the phrase I was looking for was "Self-flagellation is not acceptable." Wow, big difference there!
Anyway, we're having a ton of fun, and I look forward to more fun stuff!

The Canal
As a child, I was told never to go near the canal that ran behind my aunt and uncle's house. The concern was understandable: there were always a lot of young cousins at those family gatherings, and it was hard to keep track of them all. The swift-moving canal was the last place the family wanted to find the children at.
But that's exactly where I was yesterday! A few of us older cousins decided to get tubes and raft a mile or two down the canal. It was cold!! But the enjoyment was endless as we indulged in the feeling of being old enough to do something we had been forbidden to do in the past. Who says aging is unpleasant?
